Technical Sales Engineer

The Technical Sales Engineer will be instrumental in securing new business and launching this work into the business in a controlled and organised manner. The Technical Sales Engineer will be responsible for assisting in qualifying and quoting new business, interacting with customers during the sales phase of any new project, providing accurate information to key stakeholders regarding targets for BOM, labour and tooling budgets, maintaining accurate order book information to feed into other elements of the business to allow for resource and financial management activities to be carried out successfully.

                                                                          

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the internal key point of contact for a wide range of customers across varying sectors and product types, ensuring that customer requirements are accurately and effectively translated into the business whilst clearly managing the scope.
  • Be principal point of contact across all value streams of the business for costing new enquires. Feeding accurate reliable information to the commercial team to aid with quoting of new business.
  • Support a multi-functional team across Production and Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain and Quality to deliver the project requirements including a continual improvement culture.
  • Attend all relevant meetings, provide up to date information and timeframes on costing creation.
  • Assist in qualifying incoming leads and ensure any enquiry quoted meets with the business direction.
  • Perform ground up costings to generate quotations to ensure key business metrics are maintained.
  • Be prepared to challenge the “status quo” with all departments in order to arrive at costings which meet business profitability targets whilst still having a very high likelihood of securing the opportunity.  
  • Assist in the developing and delivery of quotations and or tenders to potential customers in line with expectations.
  • Maintain continuous project costing information to allow for report generation comparing quoted vs actuals.
  • Assist in developing future budget targets based on data and sales leads available.
  • Work in partnership with other departments in the business to bring new products to market.
  • Prepare and support internal business case costing and external quotations/proposals/audits for customer review and business wins.
  • Fully understand the manufacturing processes and key product characteristics.
  • Work closely with Supply Chain to ensure accuracy and value for money.  
  • Help to define and manage contracts and agreements which are in the best interest of the business.

 

Personal Characteristics / Qualifications

 An engineering or related degree qualification would be highly desirable

  • Confidence and experience operating in a customer facing role, within a manufacturing environment.
  • A strong understanding of manufacturing process across composite and metallic assemblies would be beneficial.
  • Financially astute, ability to generate costings, interrogate Gross and Net margins.
  • Some experience within the Aerospace, Defence, Medical, Energy/Nuclear and Automotive marketplaces would be desirable.
  • Dynamic, open-minded approach, with a desire to make a difference to all tasks carried out.
  • Excellent MS Office, MS Project, presentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with SAP Business One ERP system would be highly desirable.
  • Ability to understand and communicate engineering and manufacturing principles.
  • Approachable and ability to develop and maintain strong relationships.
  • Ability to interact in a calm manner especially during crucial conversations with customers and stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to work cohesively within a team, recognising and leverage the strengths of each individual. 
  • Flexible work attitude and willingness for travel where necessary.
  • Able to work to strict deadlines under pressure and willing to go above and beyond when necessary.
  • Positive “can do” approach and ability to work on own initiative.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good negotiation skills ideally with background in tender / bid delivery.
  • Strong interest in high performance engineering and manufacturing.
