LAC/ Refugee Clinical Psychologist

Children, young people mental health services

An exciting career opportunity has arisen for a fulltime energetic and creative clinical psychologist with a passion for and experience of working with looked after children (LAC) with an Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Child (UASC) status. The successful candidate will be part of a Barnet’s Integrated Clinical Services (BICS), a mental health service for CYP and families presenting with mild to moderate mental health difficulties in the community and within social care. We are a strong, supportive, friendly multidisciplinary department and welcome applicants particularly from a clinical psychology or equivalent clinical background. This post is equivalent to Band 7 to 8a salary, depending on experience. We welcome those qualifying this summer and newly qualified clinical psychology applicants.

BICS has four teams within their service and you will join the clinical social care (CSC) team. You will specifically work with CYP with an UASC status who have applied for asylum and are separated from both parents and/or any other responsible adult.

As part of your role, you will collaborate closely with key partners, including GPs, LAC health team, social care colleagues, CAMHS, schools and voluntary organisations. Clinically, you will contribute to the completion of comprehensive initial health assessments which will inform the first statutory review by an Independent Review Officer (IRO). Your contribution will involve the triangulation of information to create a psychologically informed formulation to clarify the specific mental health need with appropriate recommendations regarding the level of mental health input needed.

You will hold a clinical caseload of CYP from the UASC community to provide evidence-based interventions as and where indicated.  The role will also involve group interventions, training, consultation and advice to social workers, foster carers, LAC colleagues and wider professionals.

We value and encourage your continuing professional development and will support you with leadership from the Clinical Lead, line management and supervision from the Clinical Manager and peer support from the other clinical practitioners in your team.

We offer excellent specialist CPD and training opportunities such as specialist clinical therapeutic approaches. The department has established strong working relationships with colleagues in Children’s Social Care. In addition, you will have ample opportunities to work with partner agencies such as GPs, Schools, Barnet’s Tier 3 NHS Specialist CAMHS, other community and voluntary services. We also have links with the London Clinical Psychology and Systemic Training Schemes.

We would like to invite applications who like working in the community and integrating with agencies creatively to improve the experiences and outcomes of the CYP and their families in the borough.

If shortlisted you will be required to bring photographic ID to your interview to prove your identity.
