Milton Keynes College Prison Services Team at HMYOI Aylesbury are seeking innovative Teachers/Support Staff to work with a diverse group of learners, helping to build their confidence, develop their skills and achieve within a college environment. The College are looking for candidates interested in variable/ad-hoc and permanent hours, who are keen to explore Prison Education.

HMYOI Aylesbury are currently looking for individuals with one or more of the below skillsets to support their curriculum delivery – Ability as a generalist teacher to cover more than 1 of these areas would be beneficial.

TEACHING ROLES

• Functional Skills English - Entry to Level 2
• Functional Skills Maths - Entry to Level 2
• Vocational Tutors
  • • Barbering / Mentoring / Hospitality / Food Safety / Cleaning / Customer Service / Music Technology Employability & Digital Skills

NON-TEACHING ROLES

• Learner Supporting roles – Promoting the benefits of education to learners inside the prison and encouraging them to enrol on courses with education. Confidence in engaging with a wide variety of people, good verbal and written communication. Patience and Empathy required, ability to complete written reports on time and to high standards
• Department Administration - Typical admin role/duties, based inside a prison – supporting the wider education team.

A teaching qualification would be desirable, however those willing to work towards a teaching qualification who hold supporting subject specialism or industry experience would also be considered - we can provide the training to help you achieve your full potential.

Prison education runs all year round, all day Monday-Thursday and until lunchtime on a Friday. Delivery hours vary slightly prison to prison but full days are split across 2 long lessons (Morning and Afternoon).

Milton Keynes College are offering potential candidates who possess suitable skills/experience the opportunity to visit prison for an open event. This will allow candidates to experience the environment and find out more about the day-to-day regime and expectations.

ABOUT HMYOI Aylesbury…

HMYOI Aylesbury houses young prisoners aged 18-27, all serving sentences over 4 years.  The Education Department works closely with our prison colleagues to deliver medium to long courses that help prepare learners for employment both within the long-term prison estate and on release to the community.  Courses include English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry Level to Level 2), Business, ICT, Hospitality and Barista, Music Technology, Multi Skills, Peer Mentoring and Barbering. This is complemented by a range of courses available through distance learning at level 3 and beyond e.g. Open University, A Levels and BTEC level 3.

In the department we believe the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge will help our learners to end their offending behaviour.  We engage the hardest to reach learners and encourage them to take pride in their own education and self-development.  As a department, we endeavour to inspire learners to achieve and for some, attain their first significant qualifications.
