The role of the Head of Medical Services is to:

  • Lead a progressive and impactful medical function that places rider’s well-being at its heart. Delivering a clinical service that optimises athlete performance that ensures riders have the maximum opportunity to train and compete, whilst setting standards of integrity that promote the highest standard of professionalism.
  • Ensure that medical services achieve maximum impact and are fully aligned to all activity across the World Class Programme (WCP) through helping to “define and align” WITTW and playing a lead role in the performance planning process.
  • Provide leadership to the medical staff across the British Cycling and 3 rd party EIS support network to ensure that a world class medical service is developed and delivered.
  • Manage key staff within the medical to identify and deliver a world leading service. Develop and implement a comprehensive education and CPD program for all members of the medical services team to ensure that world class practice is achieved.
  • Provide a key link to important medical groups such as UK Sport, BOA and the BPA to ensure the British Cycling works effectively with its partners.
  • Implement and oversee appropriate quality assurance standards within the medical team and more broadly across the GBCT as appropriate keeping abreast of developments in sports medicine and instigate support and interventions that are the envy of other sports teams in our major competitive nations.

What you need is:

We are keen to hear from individuals who have full registration with the GMC (or equivalent) and a post graduate qualification (or equivalent) in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Diploma level with verifiable clinical training in sports medicine. Member or Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. An MSc, (or equivalent) in Sport and Exercise Medicine, training and experience in General Practice working towards, the Specialist Register in Sport and Exercise Medicine and a current immediate care certification from a recognised organisation would be desirable.

Substantial experience in the provision of medical services to elite athletes and coaches. This experience should include extensive work with national teams and their athletes. Above all you should have the passion and commitment to help British Cycling create a medical service that will be the envy of the world and operate to the highest standards of integrity. Experience of, or an understanding of the sport of cycling would be an advantage but not essential.
