The Royal Observatory Greenwich offers GCSE Astronomy classes for school-age students in full-time education on Saturday and Sunday mornings from mid-September to late May. The course covers the GCSE Astronomy syllabus in one year. Class sizes typically range from 28-32 students, with students drawn from local schools. Ability levels are mixed.
We are currently looking for a positive and flexible teacher who keeps abreast of and adopts innovative teaching approaches to deliver one of these classes. While we are keen to identify somebody with experience of teaching GCSE Astronomy, candidates with experience of teaching physics at GCSE level, A-Level or undergraduate level will also be considered. All candidates must be able to demonstrate a firm grasp of the GCSE Astronomy curriculum and appropriate knowledge of the relevant subject matter at interview.
The post holder will work an average of 6.5 hours a week for nine months, teaching classes at the ROG from 10.00-12.30 on 30 Saturdays or Sundays. They will follow a teaching schedule specifying class dates provided at the start of the academic year, following the Greenwich school calendar.
Time not spent teaching (4-6.5 hours a week) must be used to prepare for your class, produce, update and upload course materials, mark homework, carry out administration, attend meetings or fulfil other duties associated with the role. Some of this time can be worked off-site, subject to agreement.
