Lead Race Mechanic- GB Cycling Team

Great Britain Cycling Team is only involved in cycling disciplines included in the Olympic and Paralympics programme: Road including Individual Time Trial, Track, Mountain Bike Cross Country, BMX and Para-cycling specialties, therefore an expert level of mechanical competence in at least one of these areas is essential.This vacancy has a para-cycling bias, but all applicants will be assessed in respect of all key disciplines and any specific expertise should also be coupled with a willingness to diversify into other disciplines should the interests of the team dictate.

The role of a Lead Race Mechanic is all about:

  • Leading the projects relating to the development of para-cycling equipment to provide competitive advantage in the Sport
  • Building, maintaining and repairing Elite level competition cycles across the full range of Olympic and Paralympic cycle sports
  • Upholding the highest standards of bicycle maintenance and support to all athletes involved in Team GB activities
  • Management of information related to rider position and rider equipment
  • Mentoring other members of the team to build their knowledge and skills related to para-cycling equipment

What you need is:

We are keen to hear from experienced bicycle mechanics, particularly those specialising in para-cycling, encompassing tandem, hand-bike and trike expertise. Applicants without such experience may still be considered for the post, provided a high level of general competence and a strong willingness to learn can be evidenced. 

Applicants will need to possess:

  • Mechanical, technical or engineering qualifications, together with work experience at Paralympic and/or Olympic Games
  • Substantial knowledge of a wide range of bike equipment, with the ability to diagnose faults and maintain, repair and replace equipment accordingly
  • Demonstrable mechanical competency across all cycling disciplines
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral
  • The ability to work well under pressure and within a pressurised environment
  • An innovative approach to problem solving
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • A commitment to the development of the Sport, the Olympics and para-cycling ideals
  • The ability to travel extensively between sites in the UK and abroad
  • Demonstrable IT/stock control software experience

This is a profession which is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check will be required.
