Milton Keynes College offender learning team are seeking experienced lecturer to cover an independent living course. This is an exciting time for prison education and this is a great opportunity to experience prison teaching as a sessional tutor to cover Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons.

We are looking for an experienced lecturer to deliver independent living skills to a diverse group of learners within the prison. As part of our offender learning team you will help to develop a strong independent living programme that meets the needs of the learners, prison and Milton Keynes College.

The successful candidate will be passionate and dedicated to teaching with the flexibility to be scheduled to work on an ad-hoc basis. You will be a team player with excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Experience embedding Functional Skills, E&D and Employability is essential in order to successfully deliver the curriculum.

HMP Whatton is a leading prison for the treatment of male sex offenders and is nationally recognised for its programmes to reduce re-offending; CALM, Thinking Skills, Relationship, Sex Offender Treatment Programme (SOTP) and the Adapted SOTP (for offenders with a low IQ who are often unable to read or write or have severe mental health difficulties).

The education department at HMP Whatton administrates over 2000 enrolments per year and supports over 500 learners to achieve their learning goals and employment aspirations. The education department currently enjoys a 93% success rate across all of its courses.

As a successful candidate you will have:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent vocational qualification.
  • A full teaching qualification (DTTLS, PGCE, Cert Ed) or willing to work towards.
  • Assessor/Verifier Awards.
  • Teaching/training or vocational experience in a relevant discipline/subject area and relevant up-to-date knowledge.
  • A proven track record of managing and supporting diverse groups of learners through nationally accredited programmes.
  • Experience of identifying, developing and sharing innovative and creative teaching resources.
  • Experience of working with students who may have little experience of education and training (desirable).
  • Knowledge of current curriculum and accreditation developments within Further Education and specific subject area(s).
  • The ability to teach creatively, adapting to the needs of a variety of learners and willing to explore new teaching and learning strategies.
  • A good level of IT literacy and willing to develop further.
  • Accuracy and precision in written presentation.

Location: HMP Whatton
Hours: Monday – Thursday afternoons
Salary: £23.52 per delivery hour
