The General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland (GLA) Research and Development department (GRAD) works on behalf of Trinity House, Northern Lighthouse Board www.nlb.org.uk and Irish Lights www.irishlights.ie  and is based within the Trinity House offices in Harwich. The small and internationally-renowned team provides the voice of the mariner in several key developments in the next generation of maritime resilient positioning, navigation and timing services.

The Research and Innovation Engineer (Lights) supports delivery of visual signalling projects within the department, working on aspects such as refining the cooling design of LED light sources, light intensity measurement of lighthouses in the field and investigations into the use of drones for visual signalling performance confirmation. The jobholder will manage these projects, as well as carrying out technical tasks and writing reports to inform GLA colleagues.  The main tasks of the jobholder are likely to be electronics/mechanical hardware-based engineering, but some software development and technical drawing will be required as well.

These projects are focussed on the ensuring that the GLAs are able to provide a robust service to the mariner by developing new products, design tools for engineers and carrying out light measurements.

Being a small team, the jobholder will be able to influence the direction and planning of projects within GRAD. As such, an open minded, innovative and driven individual is required in the role. The individual will also be required to work alongside the other Research and Innovation Engineer to manage, maintain and use the light measurement facilities in Harwich. An interest in metrology would be beneficial.

Whilst the jobholder would be expected to concentrate their efforts on visual signalling projects, there will be opportunities to work in other areas of GRAD such as radio-navigation and communication services. This will give the jobholder the potential to broaden their knowledge and experience.

This is a great opportunity for an individual to influence the direction of future marine aids-to-navigation whilst working in a supportive friendly team!

While the department provides research and development capabilities to support all three lighthouse authorities, the contract of employment will be with Trinity House.

If you are interested in this opportunity and keen to develop your skills and experience with the GLAs, please click on the ‘more details’ button at the bottom of this advert to download the job description and complete the online application form.
