Community and Families Project Assistant
RSPB England has an exciting opportunity for a Community and Families Project Assistant to work on the development and delivery of a centrally administered initiative that seeks to engage more families, from a greater diversity of communities, with nature. Part of the Naturally Connected Communities Birmingham project - a Green Recovery Challenge funded initiative - the Birmingham Community and Families Project Assistant will work closely with the Community and Families Project Officer to explore and evaluate approaches to effectively empower, upskill and build confidence in community groups to deliver inclusive and accessible family nature-based activities in local greenspace in a way that is impactful and inspiring. The project aims to deliver sustainable opportunities for diverse families to enjoy and help nature and so meet the RSPB’s commitment to save nature through people.
What’s the role about
The role is part of a team led by the Birmingham Community Project Manager delivering a set of people-focused initiatives in the Birmingham area. The objective of this project is the creation of a toolkit incorporating a training package and family activity resources that community groups need to effectively engage families from diverse communities with nature in local greenspaces.
You will be part of a team, including volunteers, assisting in the delivery of consultation events and supporting community group led activities, and you will collect information to enable the evaluation of the impact of this community led approach. On a day-to-day basis your role will be to work alongside community groups through the process of co-designing, delivering and then evaluating the toolkit. You will be instrumental in gathering feedback and highlighting areas for improvement within the toolkit as well as being confident in offering direct assistance to groups when necessary.
What we need from you
The successful candidate will have experience of delivering inclusive and safe community activities, with a focus on families and children. Your ability to connect with diverse communities and your passion to inspire children and families will enable you to offer guidance to the groups involved. You will have an interest in nature and motivating others to connect with and help the natural world. You will be able to work independently and as part of a team, you will have excellent communication skills and will be able to build strong working relationships. With a methodical approach to collecting information, you will be able to accurately report feedback to the project team.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience
Experience of delivering activities to families or children.
Good people engagement skills that will enable you to clearly, confidently and sensitively communicate with diverse audiences and enthuse them about nature.
Organised approach with experience of gathering, recording and reporting information and feedback.
Ability and willingness to work flexibly including occasional weekends and bank holidays.
Proficiency in MS Office systems
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience
Experience of safely delivering outdoor nature-based activities.
An awareness of the barriers that may exist that prevent families from diverse urban communities from engaging with nature.
Experience of creating activity resources.
Experience of working with volunteers or community groups.
This role is based in Birmingham, with the option for the successful candidate to be either dual located working between home and the RSPB’s central Birmingham office as the business need requires or fully based in the Birmingham office if preferred. Regular travel within the Birmingham area will also be required.

This is a Contract, Part Time role for 22.5 hours per week. The hours are flexible for the successful applicant. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
