Job Description 

POST: Science Technician 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Science Laboratory Technician, Head of Science 

  • Preparing apparatus, materials and solutions, and setting up/ checking / issuing equipment for use in practical activities including practical examinations and coursework.
  • Retrieving, clearing away and cleaning all equipment after use.
  • Providing technical advice and assistance to teachers and pupils, assisting in practical activities as appropriate.
  • Disposing of waste laboratory materials including chemicals/ microbiological waste/animal waste in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of laboratory services and facilities.
  • Carrying out / arranging the maintenance (including cleaning) and repair of apparatus and equipment, and keeping appropriate records.
  • Maintaining the storage of apparatus, equipment and materials (including chemicals) in accordance with statutory guidelines.
  • Maintaining Science department resources including plant and animal collections.
  • Preparation, photocopying and filing of resources as required by the teaching staff.
  • Assisting in carrying out stock checks.
  • Checking deliveries and invoices, as instructed by the Science Technician.
  • Assisting in and recording regular checks of electrical equipment.
  • Maintaining sources of information on safety.
  • To undertake, where appropriate, other roles, which may arise either in the department or in the wider school environment for example invigilation of exams, participation in out of school trips and visits and extra – curricular activities.
