The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland (GLA) are at the forefront in the provision of safety-critical marine aids-to-navigation.  The GLA consist of Trinity House (for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar), The Northern Lighthouse Board (for Scotland and the Isle of Man) and the Commissioners of Irish Lights (for the whole of the Island of Ireland).  GRAD is a central resource shared by the GLAs to undertake research and development of physical and electronic/radio AtoN, support systems and their integration.  GRAD operates at the leading edge of new navigation developments. With technology changing quickly, the role requires a dynamic leader and manager that is capable of directing and overseeing the delivery of a wide portfolio of high quality projects on time and to cost.

Employed by Trinity House, the Head of GRAD must be comfortable working with Government and Academia at the highest levels, as well as being effective at Board level across the three GLAs. The role also involves working on international technical committees. The individual must ensure that GRAD has a strategy that supports the long-term aims of the GLAs with rigorous academic and technical evidence. The individual must have the drive and interpersonal skills to coalesce the engagement of a wide range of stakeholders into a coherent work plan. The post holder will require strong communication skills and be comfortable at briefing and presenting at many different levels.

The nature of the work means the GRAD team has to spend time together in the office in Harwich, however, there is an opportunity for some flexibility through hybrid working.  The post holder will be required to write papers and to attend conferences on behalf of the GLAs, some of which may be abroad.

We are looking for a Chartered Engineer or equivalent, with a Level 6 qualification in an appropriate engineering discipline.  They will have a strong technology background and proven industry experience in senior management and leadership roles with the skills capable of inspiring a team of highly qualified and experienced staff in the delivery of a wide portfolio of projects. A Level 7 Diploma in Management and/or Leadership would be advantageous. While not operating in a competitive market, the individual must be capable of delivering programmes/projects on time, be commercially astute and be capable of managing a large-scale budget of several million pounds, The individual will also need commercial and financial acumen in managing a budget of several million pounds and ensuring external funding is obtained where possible.
