The Victoria and Albert museum is inviting applications from UK based, mid-career practitioners working across fashion disciplines who wish to develop their practice or portfolio of work. We are interested in practitioners who will work in a critically informed way, with a thematic focus on diverse expressions of beauty and under-representation.

This residency coincides with the exhibition Tim Walker: Wonderful Things opening September 2019, for which Walker has created ten new bodies of work directly inspired by objects in the museum’s vast and eclectic collections. Using the collections of the National Art Library (NAL) as a starting point for their research, practitioners will similarly be invited to use this inspirational repository for the creation of new work, specifically a collection of scrapbooks collated by fashion journalist Norah Littlejohn that document fashion in the 20th century.

We are looking for dynamic proposals that push the boundaries of artistic practice and inspire new approaches of working with our collections. It is envisaged that research from this residency may feed into wider developments in our fashion galleries, so collaborative and inter-disciplinary practices are encouraged.

The residency will take place at the V&A South Kensington in London over a nine-month period from 14 October 2019 to 13 July 2020. The V&A will provide a £12,000 bursary and a studio space within the Museum’s Sackler Centre for arts education.

Applicants should have an interest in developing their practice and a good track record of producing and performing high quality work. We will consider applications from collectives as well as individual practitioners.

Interviews will take place on 28 June 2019.
